November 2008: Literacy Coaching
(deadline October 1, 2008)
Once found only on athletic fields, coaches have become a familiar presence in
language arts classrooms. When effective, literacy coaching can help teachers
become both more knowledgeable and more thoughtful. Coaching practices,
however, differ widely from school to school. How has coaching influenced your
teaching? What techniques or approaches make the most difference for teachers
and students? What resources have helped you benefit from coaching or be a
better coach? Do you believe coaching is worth the investment?
February 2009: Case Studies
(deadline January 1, 2009)
Case studies provide in-depth examinations of single instances or events. In
educational research, such studies often probe the particular experiences of
individual students. This issue of California English invites you to tell the
story of a student who delighted, puzzled, confused, or troubled you. This
could be a story from the past or one that you are living through.
As you write, draw generalizations and make hypotheses about teaching and
learning in light of your case study.
